What nobody tells you when you start a creative business is that you will get inundated with information.
Relevant information, irrelevant ones too.
Meaningful information, and those that you could have done without knowing.
Projections, announcements, referrals, opinions and many, many different ways to do what you already know how to do.
It gets really noisy out here.
While we greatly benefit from the low entry barrier that the internet has provided, we now have to deal with steady stream of content we are surrounded by.
How do you stay creative through all that? How do you not go crazy from the noise and still serve your people with original insights?
Here’s what I do when it all gets too much:
I log off.
I know it sounds cliché, but sometimes the most creative thing you can do is walk away. Just for a bit. I go outside. I clean something. I talk to someone who doesn’t care about content calendars.I return to my people.
The ones I want to serve. I think about her — the African woman building something beautiful, uncertain but bold. What does she need today? That grounds me.I write before I scroll.
Even if it’s just a few lines in my notes app. That way, my voice is the first one I hear.I remind myself that originality isn’t volume, it’s perspective.
You don’t need to say something no one’s ever said. You just need to say it like you.
This is the age of abundance, yes. But also, discernment is a skill.
The more you learn to tune in to yourself, the less shaken you are by the noise around you.
Protect your creative voice. It is the one thing that will continue to set you apart.
Now, what’s been happening?
Well, our book launch is on saturday. It has been one hell of a ride. My pinterest fees is full of book publishing pins and I’ve learned so much about the publihing world, my head is reeling.
But in all of it, I’m so thankful for the priviledge to release “That internet thing you’re doing” into the world. I cannot wait for all the brilliant women who will read the book to own their voice and take up space.
You can get your copy here and I’ll definitely keep you updated about how the event went!
