How to start building your brand before you feel ready

If you’re waiting for the perfect moment to start building your brand, I have news for you: It’s never going to come.
At least, not in the way you imagine. You won’t wake up one day suddenly feeling 100% ready, fully confident, and perfectly positioned. That’s not how it works.
You start before you’re ready. You build as you go.
And the good news? You don’t need a fancy logo, a website, or a perfectly curated Instagram grid to begin. You just need to take small, intentional steps daily. That’s what I did and here’s how you can do that.
1. Craft your message - even if it’s messy at first
Your brand isn’t just what you do, it’s why you do it and who you do it for. But don’t get stuck thinking you need to have it all figured out before you start. Instead, try this:
Ask yourself: What do I care about deeply?
Who do I want to help? What problems can I solve?
What do I want to be known for?
Start with what you know now, and refine your message as you go. Clarity comes from action, not overthinking.
2. Show up consistently - even if it’s imperfect
Consistency builds trust. But I’m not saying you have to post five times a day on every platform. Start small:
Post once a week on YouTube.
Share a quick thought on LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter.
Record a short video or voice note instead of writing long captions.
Your audience doesn’t need perfection. They need to see you.
The more you show up, the more confident you’ll feel.
3. Use your story to connect even if you think it’s not “Big” Enough
We connect with people, not polished brands. Don’t be afraid to share:
What led you to do what you do.
A challenge you’ve overcome.
Lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Your story makes you relatable. And when people relate to you, they trust you. In my book - That internet thing you’re doing - I share all the ways you can use storytelling to your advantage .It opens for pre-order on the 1st of March!
If I had waited until I felt 100% ready, I wouldn’t be writing this. I wouldn’t have a podcast, a business, or a book on the way. I built all of this while figuring things out in real-time.
And you can too.
Start with one small step today - whether it’s writing a post, sharing your thoughts, or introducing yourself to your audience. Then, take another step tomorrow.
You don’t have to be ready. You just have to begin.
Now it’s your turn
What’s one small step you can take today toward building your brand? Drop it in the comments, I’d love to cheer you on.
