People Google you before they greet you. It's just the world we live in now. That's why your personal brand isn’t optional. It’s how you introduce yourself without speaking. It’s the difference between being remembered or ignored. It the differentiating factor between leaders and non-leaders. It's what makes on expert speaker and panel material and another, the industry's best kept secret.
The good news is that you don’t need to overhaul your entire life—there are small steps you can take today to build visibility and credibility. Let’s dive in:
1. Google Yourself
Search your name and see what comes up. If you don’t like what you see—or worse, you see nothing—that’s a sign it’s time to get intentional. I google myself at least once a week. Vanity? No, strategy. My personal brand is my business, I take it seriously and you should too.
2. Update Your Bio
Your Instagram, LinkedIn, and email signature should all tell people who you are, what you do, and why it matters. Clarity is branding. I always tell my clients, confused people don't buy and make no mistake, we are all selling something online. As an employee, you are selling your services to the company you work for. As a volunteer, you're selling your service in exchange for experience. There is always a sale.
3. Post a Value-Packed Thought
Not everything has to be a content calendar masterpiece. One insight, one lesson, one tip can position you as an expert. Write it. Post it. Don't overthink it.
4. Create a Brand Introduction Post
Reintroduce yourself to your audience. Share your journey, what you do, who you help, and why it matters. People forget. Remind them.
5. Ask for Testimonials
Text a client, colleague, or collaborator and ask for a quick testimonial. Social proof builds instant credibility. It is liquid gold. So get out of the mindset of not wanting to bother anyone and ask for some reviews!
6. Pitch Yourself for a Podcast or Panel
Don’t wait to be discovered. Send a DM or email to a platform you admire. Show up where your people already are. I have a target of at least two pitches a week. I don't always meet it, but I try. get used to pitching yourself. Sometimes people just can't find you on their own.
7. Share a Before & After Story
Whether it’s a mindset shift, a business win, or a lesson learned—stories resonate more than strategies. Use your journey. Share your lessons. Don't be ashamed of where you're coming from. Every part of the journey led you here.
8. Add Personality to Your Content
Don’t just sound like an expert. Sound like you. A personal brand is part personality, part positioning. Show up as a human. Many experts just want to sound like experts. People want to deal with and learn from people.
9. Collaborate with Someone
Tap into someone else’s audience by doing an IG Live, co-writing a post, or hosting a webinar. Borrow visibility until you build your own. I've collaborated on many fronts over the years, other people's podcasts, other people's publications, etc. If you're not a people person, here's my advice - Learn how to people. I talk about this in depth in chapter 8 of my book "That internet thing you're doing".
10. Say What You Really Think
Boldness is a brand builder. Speak your truth. Thought leadership doesn’t come from playing safe. You have unique ideas, privileges and experiences. Use them to your advantage.
Bottom line?
Your brand is your leverage. Start small. Start scrappy. Just don’t stay silent. Speak up!
